Welcome to Civic ("Civic," "we," "our," or "us"), a platform dedicated to reimagining and revitalizing people's connection to and engagement with government for a 21st century world. Please read these Terms carefully because they govern your access to and use of the Civic mobile application, website (civicpolitics.com), and all other Civic software applications and online services (collectively, the "Service" or "Services").

Agreement to Terms

By using any portion of the Service, you agree to comply with and be bound by these Terms. These Terms apply to everyone who uses the Service, whether or not you have created a Civic account.

The Service is designed for civic engagement and educational purposes. You agree that you are using the Service to learn about your representatives, legislation, and elections, and to engage constructively with your government.

Changes to Terms or Services

We may update these Terms as the Service changes, and we will update the dates at the top when we do. If a change materially reduces your rights, we will notify you by email (if you have provided one) or by posting notice on the Service at least 30 days before the change takes effect. Other changes take effect when posted. If you continue to use the Service after a change takes effect, you agree to the updated Terms. If you don't agree, please stop using the Service.

Because the Service is evolving, we may change or discontinue all or any portion of it at any time, with reasonable notice to you when practicable.

Account Creation and Eligibility

You can look up your districts and representatives without an account. You need an account to use the bills page, including following bills, approving or disapproving of bills, and receiving notifications about bills.

If you create an account, you represent that:

You are thirteen (13) years or older.
You are not barred from using the Service under applicable law.
All information you provide, including your address, is accurate and complete.
You will keep that information accurate.

Civic is free to use. You can choose to help fund Civic by purchasing an optional Supporter tier, described below.

We may suspend or terminate your account if (i) any information you provide proves to be inaccurate, false, or misleading, or (ii) you violate these Terms.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password and account and agree to notify us immediately if your password is lost, stolen, or disclosed to an unauthorized third party. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.

Description of the Service

Civic makes learning about your representatives, legislation, and elections accessible and engaging. The Service allows users to:

Find and learn about their elected representatives at the federal, state, and local levels
Learn about and follow current and proposed legislation, including through plain-language summaries
Approve or disapprove of bills
Stay informed about upcoming elections, candidates, and ballot measures
Receive notifications about bills

Our platform aggregates publicly available government data and other information to provide comprehensive, nonpartisan civic information. We strive to present information in an equitable, accessible manner that promotes informed civic participation.

Civic does its best to provide accurate, up-to-date information and an excellent user experience. However, we rely on information from government sources and third parties that we do not control. We do not warrant that the information shown through the Service, including representative details, legislative updates, or election information, is always accurate, complete, reliable, current, or error-free. Please verify important information, especially election dates, deadlines, and polling details, through official government sources.

AI-Generated Bill Summaries

Civic uses artificial intelligence to create plain-language summaries of legislation. These summaries are meant to help you understand bills quickly, but they may contain errors or leave out important details. They are not the official text of any bill and are not legal advice. Before relying on a summary, please read the official bill text and consult government sources.

My Ballot

My Ballot shows you the races, candidates, and ballot questions we believe will appear on your ballot, based on your address and on information from election authorities and other public sources. It is not your official ballot. Races, candidates, and the wording of questions can change until your election authority certifies the ballot, our sources can be incomplete or late, and we can make mistakes matching your address to your districts. We tell you on the page how many races we found and how many we could not confirm, but you should treat the whole page as our best picture and not as the ballot itself. Before you vote, check your official ballot through your state or local election authority, which we link to from the page.

Marking choices in My Ballot is a way to plan. It is not voting, it does not register you, and Civic never submits anything to any election authority on your behalf. Your choices stay on your device unless you choose to add them to the anonymous tally or save them to your encrypted history, as described in our Privacy Policy. If you choose to save a picture of your marked ballot, that picture is yours, and it carries a note that it is not an official ballot.

You agree that we are not responsible for any decision you make, or any vote you cast or do not cast, in reliance on My Ballot.

Bill Positions and Aggregate Counts

When you approve or disapprove of a bill, you are telling Civic how you feel so your view can be counted. Your individual follows and bill positions are private. You agree that your bill positions may be included in aggregate statistics, such as "62% of Civic users in this district who weighed in disapproved of this bill," that may be shown within the Service, shared with elected officials' offices, or published. These statistics never identify you. Our Privacy Policy describes this in detail.

You agree not to manipulate these counts through fake accounts, automation, or coordinated inauthentic activity. We may exclude from aggregate counts any activity we reasonably believe to be inauthentic.

Acceptable Use

When using the Service, you agree not to:

Create fake accounts or use automated accounts
Impersonate any person or organization, or misrepresent your identity or residence
Use the Service to promote or carry out illegal activity
Attempt to suppress voting or democratic participation
Scrape, harvest, or collect information from the Service or about other users
Interfere with the Service, circumvent its security, or access it by automated means other than through interfaces we provide

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.

Supporter Tiers

Civic offers optional Supporter tiers (Civic Supporter, Sustainer, and Superstar) that let you help fund Civic. Supporter tiers are purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play, and the price and billing period are shown before you buy.

Civic is not a charity, so Supporter tier payments are not tax-deductible donations. They are also not contributions to any candidate, political party, or campaign. Purchasing a Supporter tier does not change what information you can access in Civic, how your data is handled, or what anyone else can see about you.

Recurring Supporter tiers renew automatically at the then-current price at the end of each billing period until you cancel. You can cancel at any time in your Apple or Google account subscription settings, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Deleting your Civic account does not cancel a subscription, so please cancel through Apple or Google as well. Refunds are handled under Apple's or Google's refund policies. If we change the price of a tier, we will give notice as required by Apple or Google before the new price applies to your renewal.

Text Message Updates

If you sign up on civicpolitics.com to receive text messages, you agree to receive recurring text messages from Civic about updates to the Civic app at the phone number you provide. Messages may be sent using automated technology. Consent is not a condition of any purchase.

Message frequency varies.
Message and data rates may apply.
To stop: Reply STOP at any time. We will send one message confirming that you have been unsubscribed, and you will not receive further texts unless you sign up again.

Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. We handle your phone number and text message consent as described in our Privacy Policy.

Nonpartisan Commitment

Civic is nonpartisan. We do not endorse candidates, political parties, or ballot measures. We present information about representatives, legislation, and elections neutrally so you can make up your own mind.

Third-Party Content and Links

The Service may contain links to third-party websites, including government websites and news sources. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or practices of these sites. We encourage you to review the terms and privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.

Data Sources and Government Information

Civic draws information from public sources, including government databases and official websites, public records and documents, and other publicly available sources. We strive to use authoritative, nonpartisan sources but cannot guarantee the completeness or accuracy of all information, and we are not liable for errors or omissions in third-party information. For the most current and official information, please consult original government sources.

Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to us. Please review our Privacy Policy for how we collect, use, and protect your data, including what others can and cannot see. Our Privacy Policy is incorporated into these Terms and is available on our website and in our app.

Intellectual Property

The Service contains material protected by United States and international copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. We and our licensors own all right, title, and interest in the Service and our content, including all associated intellectual property rights.

You may not copy, modify, distribute, publish, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, create derivative works of, or otherwise exploit any of our content without our express written permission.

The Civic name, logo, and other trademarks are our property. You may not use our trademarks without our prior written consent.

Feedback and Suggestions

We welcome feedback, comments, and suggestions for improving the Service. You can submit feedback through our app or by emailing civic@civicpolitics.com. By providing feedback, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, fully paid, royalty-free license to use, copy, modify, and implement your feedback for any purpose related to improving our Service.

Apple App Store Terms

If you use Civic on an Apple device, these additional terms apply. These Terms are between you and Civic only, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims relating to the app or your use of it, including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, and consumer protection claims, and is not responsible for any third-party intellectual property claims. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo and are not on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Civic and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from (i) your use of the Service, (ii) your violation of these Terms, or (iii) your violation of any rights of another party. This section survives termination of these Terms.

Termination

We may terminate your access to the Service at our sole discretion, with or without notice, including for violation of these Terms. You may delete your account at any time in the app or at civicpolitics.com/deletemyaccount.

Upon termination, your right to use the Service ends immediately. Provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including ownership provisions, warranty disclaimers, indemnification, and limitations of liability.

Warranty Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. WE EXPLICITLY DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND QUIET ENJOYMENT.

WE MAKE NO WARRANTY THAT THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT ANY INFORMATION, INCLUDING AI-GENERATED SUMMARIES AND THE RACES, CANDIDATES, QUESTIONS, AND POLLING PLACES SHOWN IN MY BALLOT, WILL BE ACCURATE, COMPLETE, OR CURRENT.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CIVIC AND ITS AFFILIATES WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOST PROFITS, LOSS OF DATA, OR LOSS OF GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY ARISING FROM THESE TERMS OR YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($100) OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, WHICHEVER IS GREATER.

Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of New York, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from these Terms or the Service will be resolved through binding arbitration in accordance with the rules of the American Arbitration Association, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in court to prevent irreparable harm.

Before initiating arbitration, the parties agree to attempt good faith negotiations for sixty (60) days after written notice of the dispute.

Accessibility and Equal Access

Civic is committed to ensuring equal access to civic information for all users. We strive to make the Service accessible to users with disabilities and to comply with applicable accessibility standards. If you encounter accessibility barriers, please contact us so we can address them.

Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Civic regarding the Service and supersede any prior agreements. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full effect.

You may not assign these Terms without our written consent. We may assign these Terms without restriction.

Our failure to enforce any provision does not constitute a waiver. Any waiver must be in writing and signed by our authorized representative.
